NEW SHINGLE DREDGE.
BIG ADVANTAGES CLAIMED. Distinct advantages are claimed on behalf of a new shingle dredge which lias been completed at Auckland by Messrs. Winstone, Ltd., for use in working the shingle deposits at Waikawai Beach, Coromandel. The dredge, which has been constructed under the supervision of the firm's chief engineer, Mr. W. M. Stephenson, is fitted with a system of grabs instead of barrows, which will allow shingle to be lifted instead of scooped from the depo-, sits. As a result, the shingle will be almost free from mud and other useless matter. After being grabbed from the deposits the shingle will be hoisted to a hopper and thence to a rotary screen, where it will be washed before being carried to a sump flooded with water. From the sump the shingle will be loaded on to scows. It has long been the desire of builders at Auckland to secure a dredge capable of gathering a good aggregate of clean shingle suitable for concrete, and it is hoped that the new dredge will accomplish this end. The dredge, in tow of the Muriwai and Waihonini, was expected to leave the Nelson Street wharf this afternoon. i
