COMMONWEALTH SHIPS.
SOME EXCELLENT BERTHS.
(Received 1.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question regarding the Commonwealth shipping line, the Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, stated that the chairman of the Shipping Board received a salary of £3500 a year. Two other directors were paid £3000 each annually and 159 officers of the board received £57,797. Mr. Bruce said it was not possible for the Government to undertake an investigation of the position in regard to overhead charges with a view to putting the line on a paying basis, as the control of the line was vested in the Commonwealth Shipping Board, which was entirely responsible for the administration. The line comprises sixteen vessels.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
