REMODELLING MEW « PREMISES. WORK TO COMMENCE AT ONCE. The building occupied by the Commercial Travellers' Club in Dtirharii Street was recently purchased by the Auckland Power Board, and the club immediately successfully negotiated for the purchase of Messrs. E. Porter and Company's old building in High Street. Tenders were called for the remodelling of the premises, aiid, one having now. beeti-accepted, the work of bringing about the alteration will be put in haiid at once. The plans provide for a handsome building of three storeys in front and four at the bank; and the contract price is in the Vicinity of £7000. The exterior of the building -which is of red brick, will only be altered to the extent that it will bje reconditioned. A new entrance will be provided, and the design will be extremely attractive. There will be two columns which will be done in plaster, running the height of the building, giving the entrance an imposing appearance. The most extensive alterations will be carried out in the interior of the premises. The dining room will be constructed on the basement, below High Street. It will be reached either by means of a lift or by steps from the ground floor. The room will take up practically the whole width of the building, and will be finished in plaster. The old columns that are at present existent Will be boxed with rimu facings and enrichments. By means of folding doors access will be gained from this room to an area that will be tastefully done as a palm court. The kitchen will adjoin the dining hall, and will be fitted with the latest and most modem appointments. The ground floor will consist of the bar and the lounge, these two rooms taking up almost all the space. The lounge will be entirely panelled in rimu. The secretary's office and the public office will also be closeted on this floor. The first floor will accommodate one visitors' room, and the remainder of the floor will consist of a billiard room. This will be handsomely appointed and will be one of the features of the new building. The top floor will house the library and reading room, the two being divided by. a folding door, so that the whole area may, if needed,, be thrown open for recreation purposes. Artistic finishings will be the keynote of the entire premises, and a great improvement on the present building will be the result. A lift will run to all floors, and the convenience of the members is being attended to in every detail. Messrs. Holman and Moses are the architects, and Mr. A. T. Scarlett is the builder. The contract is to extend over a period of about five months.
