SIR SIDNEY LEE. LONDON, March 4. The eleatli has occurreel of Sir Sidney Lee. author of biographies of the late j Queen Victoria and King Edward VII., lin his 67th year.— (Reuter.) I " i Born in London in 1859 and educated i at the City of London School and Balliol I College, Oxford, Sir Sidney Lee gained I many honours in the fields of literature and had various degrees and distinctions bestowed upon him by universities and learned bodies. Besides his biographical works, which included those on Queen Victoria and King Edward VII., he was an authority, indeed the leading living one, on Shakesperean matters. His "Life of Shakespeare" is accepted as the chief standard work on this subject and h : s "Stratford-on-Avon, from Earliest Times to the Death of Shakespeare" is an historical document, the accuracy and value of which are universally recognised. He was chairman of the executive of the Shakespeare Birthday Trust, Stratford-on-Avon, from 1903 till his death. EX-BISHOP CROSSLEY. LONDON, March 4. Dr. Owen T. L. Crossley, formerly Bishop of Auckland, was knocked down by a motor-van in London. His skull was fractured a-nd be died shortly afterwards.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Dr. Crossley. who was ordained in worked fn'the Irish parish of Leanatriek. County Down, for four years. then went over to Ensrland where he laboured in various parishes till be rereiyed a "\Telhourne appointment in 1905." Tn 1010 he was elpcted Bishop of Auckland in succession to the late Dr. Nelican. and was consecrated in St "Uarv's Cathedral at Parnell. on April 25. 1911. He held this post for only two years, however, when he resigned for health reasons. He returned to England and. after four years as rector nf St. Andrew's 'Mayor. Cardiff, was, in 1917.. appointed Assistant Bishop of Llandaff, filling that position until 1920. He had all but completed his 65th year at the time of his death.
