AUSTRALIA'S WITHDRAWAL. NO OPTION. LONDON, February 22. S. N. Doust, writing in the '"Daily Mail," says he is not surprised at Australia's absence from the next Davis Cup competition. Her only chance of recuperating her financial losses would be to enter her strongest tea.ni in the European zone; but the absence of Patterson and Anderson gives her no option but to withdraw. FINANCE PROBLEM. CANADIAN CHAIRMAN'S VIEW. MONTREAL, February 22. The Australians always had brought tennis to a high degree of efficiency, said the chairman (Mr. Watt) of the Canadian Davis Cup committee. Great expense was involved in bringing a t?\m from \ustralia, but he had hoped that some means of supDlementing toe funds of these teams might have been found in the United States. BROOKES SAYS USELESS. MELBOURNE, February 23. Norman Brookes, Miss Esna Boyd. J. B. Hawkes. and R. Schlesinger to-day expressed the opinion that it would be useless to send a Davis Cun team this year. All suggested that an American team should visit Australia.
