NOT THE LEAGUE'S PURPOSE. LONDON, February 2S. The "Times' , says it is not going too far to say the country lias been definitely shocked by the unexpected proposal to reduce to torms of ordinary diplomatic bargaining an occasion which ought not to have darkened the symbol of European reconciliation. There is only one clear way, says the paper, namely,' after admitting Germany to postpone the whole question of the enlargement of the Council until Sontember.

The Labour paper, the "Daily Herald." says it is clear that the overwhelming opinion of the country, even in the ranks of the Conservative party, is opposed to granting a seat to Poland as well as Germany. Yet it seems clear also that Sir Austen, in private conversations •with foreign diplomats, has given an assurance which has compromised himself and his colleagues.

Once again, remarks the '""Herald." secret and irresponsible diplomacy lias involved Britain in obligations of ■which even Ministers knew nothing until it -was too late. — (A. and N.Z.) STORM IN A TEAPOT. GENEVA, February 27. Lithuania has requested the League of Xations to intervene in the matter of the alleged Polish -violation of the frontier on Wednesday. This action has been taken notwithstanding the fact that the Polish delegates deny the Lithuanian allegations, and that an official telegram from Warsaw describes the incident as being closed.— (Reuter.)
