THE SENATE AGAIN.

Auckland has fought so long a fight for its engineering school that it will not ; be disheartened by another defeat in the Senate. The result of 'yesterday's debate, ; however, is not creditable to that body. There was a recommendation from the Science, Engineering, ■ Agricultural } and Forestry Committee that, as recomi mended by the University Cotnmiesion, recognition be given* to the Auckland school for the first two sections of the engineering degree. One would have thought that the Senate would take this , opportunity of doing belated'justice to Auckland, but no, the opportunity was > missed, and an amendment carried to defer the matter until tha,Commis- ■ sion's report had been considered by. a i special cbmmittee. There was no need •to delay justice in this way. The Chan--1 cellor protested against the imputation against opponents of recognition, of "provincial or parochial motives." The University Commission, however, came i to the conclusion that there appeared to ■be "some ground for the opinion, i expressed by witnesses that the Senate wai influenced by provincial jealousies.' , i It does not much matter, however, what the motive, is. The hard fact'is the . obstruction, and it must be removed. i ■ v ■• *
