SHOULD FLAPPERS FIGHT?

MISS NEWTON SAYS YES. BUT GOVERNMENT OBJECT. LONDON, January 31. The promoter of a girls' boxing meeting called off the contest, declaring he did not wish to oppose public opinion, which was clearly not ready for girls' fisticuffs.

The decision coincides with a letter from the Home Secretary replying to a protest against a contest in which he pointed out that though it was an outrage he had no power to interfere if the girls were merely sparring ■without the object of one winning by inflicting injuries to the other. The letter adds that it would not be illegal, mainly because no legislature ever imagined such a disgraceful exhibition could ever be staged in England. Hiss Newton, who is training with men boxers, is most disappointed, and declares it is unfair. "I'll proceed with my sparring, nevertheless." she says. ""I would not forego boxing for anything in the world. Ido not know what all the fuS3 is about.'"
