TAUPO WATER BOARD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of January 28th, there appears the report of a discussion Iby the Birkenhead Borough Council of the proposal to join the Taupo water scheme. The Birkenhead Council are apparently under a misapprehension, j and, as some people may be misled in this way, I should be glad if you would permit mc to correct it. There will bo no £2000 of preliminary expenses until after the Act, providing for the formation of the board, has been passed, ! and the board, which will then come I into existence, will meet all such pre- '; liminary expenses. The object of the scheme is to make it unnecessary for 1 each local body to have its own scheme ' and raise its own loan. Apparently, some of the Birkenhead councillors recognise the necessity of a change in the method of obtaining water, but are deterred by the question of preliminary expenses, which is entirely a bogy of I their own raising.—l am, etc., i E. H. POTTER, Chairman of Committee.
