AMERICAN ATHLETES.
AT GISBORNE MEETING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Friday. The American athletes, Scliolz and Hahn, competed at the Gisborne meeting before 2000 spectators to-day. Seholz gave a magnificent exhibition of sprinting. Hahn appeared to be somewhat harshly treated by the handicapper and failed to register a -win. Kesults are— 100 Yards Handicap.—A Thorpe, 14yds 1 ; J. V. Seholz, Kcr, 2 ; L. Sutcliffe, CJyds, 3. Time, 0 3-ss. Won by a touch. 73 Yards Invitation Ptace.—l. V. Seholz, 1; F. Truman, 2; L. Sutcliffe, 3. Time, 7 4-os. Won by a few inches. 220 Yards Handicap.— J. V. Scholz, scr, 1; J. L. Sutcliffe, 10yds, 2; O Paltridgo, 10yds, 3. Time 21 3-ss—equal to Australasian record, against the breeze. A great finish. Hahn was handicapped out of the mile, which was covered in 4m 34 2-ss. He withdrew from the 440 yds. event.
Lady Allenby, though her hair remains unshingled, has a good -word for the modern flapper, whom she describes as "a delightful creature, providing she is not given too free a hand." Some flappers, -she admitted to a Press representative, needed the guidance of older folk. Parents were not, however, entirely free from blame, for, after the war, many of them wanted to give their girls a good time, with the result that some of those girls lad a little selfish.
