DESERT GLOW WINS CXTP.

CAWNPORE TAKES THE STEWARDS.

The summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club was inaugurated at Devonjiort yesterday in beautiful weather. There was a very large attendance and some good racing was provided. The track was in good order. In the Hauraki Hurdles Fininack fell at the second obstacle and broke his neck, his rider, J. Puncheon, receiving a broken arm and injuries to his collarbone. During the day the sum of £fi2,727 was put through themachine, against £62,511 10/ for the corresponding clay last year, an increase of £215 10/. A Close Finish. The programme opened with the Trial Handicap, for which Sir Henry, Auruniavis, St. Louis and Tupuhi were scratched. Luxurious was made about £401) better favourite than Maveelish, while Appellant was next best supported. Hnngawera and Royal Flight led along the back from Monday, Some Lady and Killute. Crossing the top Royal Flight and Hangawera were in command, with Monday, Appellant, Luxurious. Some Lady and Killute. A good race saw Killute win by a short head from Appellant and Luxurious, who dead-heated for second place. Hangawera was fourth, with Monday, Maveelish and Some Lady next. MeTavish, rider of Monday, stated that his horse got on to the heels of Hangawera, and he had to ease Monday, with the result that lie dame out on to Maveelish and Appellant. This was accepted. An Outsider Scores. Daylight carried about £;iOO more than Archeen in the Zealandia Handicap, while Dan Quin and Pinon also had friends. Dan Quin led along the back from Pinon, Archeen, Prince Abbey and Alfort, but before a couple of furlongs had been covered Alfort had taken charge, with Pinon, Dan Quin, Prince Abbey and Uralla next. The order was much the same across the top. Alfort was first to turn for home, from. Uralla, Pinon, Daylight and Miss Vera. In the run home Uralla took charge to, win by three-quarters of a length from Alfort, who beat Daylight by a neck. Archeen, Pinon, Joy Ride, Gold Fern and Miss Vera followed. The winner was the outsider of the field. ■ Finmack Breaks His Neck. Bustler was a good favourite for the Haiiraki Hurdles, while Some Fashion, Irish Jig and Daddy's Girl were supported in that order. Praiseworthy showed out at the start, but Daddy's Girl ran to the front after the first hurdle and led past the stands from Praiseworthy, Rippling, Ngatea, Mangahewa, Bustler, Irish Jig and Some Fashion. Daddy's Girl was still the pilot along the back from Eippling, Praiseworthy, Ngatea, Some Fashion, Bustler and Irish Jig. The last-named run up second before the top was reached, with Flowing Bowl, Rippling, Praiseworthy and Bustler next. Irish Jig was first to turn for home from Daddy's Girl, Bustler, Flowing Bowl and Some Fashion. A good race saw Irish Jig get the decision by half a head from Daddy's Girl, which beat Bustler by a neck, Flowing Bowl, Some Fashion, Bright Light and Rippling were next. Finmack fell and broke his neck at the second hurdle, Mangahewa came to grief at the fifth and Praiseworthy at the last.. Puncheon, rider of Finmack, had one of his arms broken. The stewards hold an inquiry into interference with Daddy's Girl by the winner, and though the judge's placings were not altered, R. E. Thompson, the ! rider of Irish Jig was suspended for a fortnight. The Cup Race. Ruapapa and Spoony (which had gone sore) were the defections from the Takapuna Cup. Musketoon was about £70 better backed than Transformer, with Town Bank and Desert Glow also well supported. Desert Glow was first to show out from Royal Present, but before the stands were reached Royal Present and Tresillian had taken charge with Transformer and Desert Glow next' followed by Town Bank, Right and Left, Musketoon, and Cureaform. Royal Present and Tresillian held their position along the back, with Desert Glow, Transformer, Right and Left, ToAvn Bank, Musketoon, and Passionate next. Royal Present and Transformer led across the top from Town Bank and Desert Glow, but the lastnamed was first to turn for home, with Transformer, Royal Present, and Town Bank handy. Desert Glow went on to win by a length from Town Bank which heat Transformer by half * a length. Royal Present, Cureaform, Musketoon, Tresillian, and Right and Left were next. A Favourite Beaten. Brushwood Boy was supported to the extent of about £400 more than Hokioi for the Ferry Handicap, while Curraghmore was next in request. Hokioi led past the stands from Knighthood, Curraghmore, and Piton. Hokioi was still in charge along the back from Ahi Ngaro, with Knighthood, Brushwood Boy, Curraghmore, Merry Ann, and Piton next. Hokioi was attended by Merry Ann, Knighthood, Brushwood Boy, Curraghmore, and Piton as they crossed the top, but entering the straight the order was Hokioi, Curraghmore, Merry Ann, Brushwood Boy, and Knighthood. In the run home Curraghmore took charge and won by a length and a half from Brushwood Boy, which beat Hokioi by three-quarters of a length. Knighthood, Merry Ann, and Piton were next. Tea Bell Again. Tea Bell, which has performed well at Takapuna meetings, was made about £300 better favourite than Value for the Lalhope Handicap, while Flying Juliet and Atapai were next fancied in a "ood betting race. all the way. Coming past the stands he was attended by Kawa, Mahga-loire, Black Cruiser, Miss Melva, and Archibald, while Some Bother was well last. Miss Melva had run up second along the back, with Kawa next, Archibald falling at the fence by the six furlong post. Kawa had again run up to King Abbey crossing the top, and the pair entered the straight in front of Miss Melva and Black Cruiser. Once over the last fence King Abbey went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Miss Melva, which beat Kawa by half a length. Black Cruiser and Mahgoloire were next. Gilmer, rider of Archibald, had a toe injured. The Concluding Event. The programme concluded with the Stewards Handicap. Cawnpore. which performed so well at Ellerslie and Trentham, was made about £300 better favourite than Nancy Lee. with Heisler, York Abbe 3% and Air Queen all well supported in a good betting race. Nancy Lee was quickest to begin, but Tutankhamen then ran to the front and Ipd along the back from Cawnpore, Day Guard, and Heisler.
