ESCAPE FROM PRISON.
•0 SUPERINTENDENT'S EXPLANATION. Regarding the "Stars comment in its editorial columns yesterday, on the action of the gaol authorities in refusing information concerning the escape, of a prisoner, the gaol superintendent (Mr. Vincent) explained to a reporter to-day that what deterred him from giving information was that a magisterial inquiry always followed an escape, and that if he made his viewpoint public the blame might be thrown on some of his officers, when he himself was at- fault. As far as Monday's , escape was concerned, he said he did not know the true position till 4.30 p.m. yesterday. It was pointed out to Mr.' Vincent that what the "Star. really took exception to was the manner in which the reporter was treated when he made an inquiry concerning the manner in which the prisoner was recaptured, and that the fact that a] description could not be given, was regarded as absurd. Mr. Vincent tendered an apology for the uncivil manner adopted ,to the reporter by his officer.
