THEIR LITTLE "DAMN."
ROUGH HOCKEY GIRLS. EVEN UMPIRES SHOCKED. LONDON, January 6. The habit of hockey girls using a little ""damn"' or a worse expletive when they meet with nasty knocks is the subject of an official protest by the All England Women's Hockey Association. The association instances the case of a leading Englishwoman forward, who was completely knocked off her game by the language of an opposing half-back. | The association's magazine explains ! that it is feared in some quarters that ; hockey will lower the girls' tone and : make them rough. Therefore, the prac- : tice of swearing must be discouraged. ! Captains of hockey teams have been j requested not to allow smoking in club j houses. i "It is too silly for words." says Mrs. ! Charters, the Irish international hockey j player, when referring to the allegations. "Players may ejaculate, 'Bother:' iof 'Dash;' but never turn round and I curse an opponent. For really had I language, go to the women tennis [players. They sometimes say: "Fudge,' j 'hang,' 'blow.' or "blast.' " I "Th language women ue makes the j umpire blush, especially if he is a i man. I have threatened 'to -end off i women if they repeated offensive epiI thets," says Mr. Savage, ex-president of I tile North fri-h Hockey Union. ! "They think." he went on, ''that I emancipation permits -hem to use i strong language because it is manni-'i, ; and it has a natural sequence in girls 'rushing off the field at half-time and '■ full-time to indulge in cigarettes. - ' i
