Porteous denied having taken any part in the affair other than that of a carrier, saying that Marshbanks had paid him a nominal sum for the work performed. The magistrate decided to give Porteous the benefit of the doubt, and he was discharged. Marshbanks remained in the dock, to receive sentence. "Porteous has an even worse record than Marshbanks, sir." Marshbanks was sentenced to twelve months' reformative detention.
