Grand Knight showed great brilliancy yesterday morning in a sprint home after long east- work. Looking remarkably well, that proficient jumper Eerie is being pottered about by Trainer E. Murtagh. Considering the amount of racing Eerie has done over formidable courses like that at Kiccarton and Trentham her legs are remarkably good, in fact they do not { show a blemish. j Since July Te ilonanui has won £4200 in stakes, as well as a gold cup valued at f 100, so the Potoa —Unity . colt has already given his owner, Mrs. j, W, Graham, a handsome return for the i 500 guineas she paid for him in Feb-1 '■ ruary last. Kemball has left Standard in the Wellington Stakes, and though the son of Absurd—Peroneal is coming along nicely, he is hardly up to weight-for-age (says a Masterton writer). The owner has always been a firm believer that classic races should be patronised, and whenever he has a candidate which has even an outside chance of success, his colours are to be found flying. There have been few more liberal owners racing in the Dominion than Mr. Kemball during the past nine years. Patrons of the lawn at Trentham next \yeek (says the "Dominion"), will notice an improvement on the front of tha totalisator. On each side of the "total" dial been placed two clock faces about two fefet in diameter, and i plainly visible" from aH parts of the' enclosure. One will give the time of day • while the other will indicate the closing j time of the machine. Another innovation . that will be appreciated is an alteration ! of the notice board on the totalisator making provision for registering the scratchings in all the eight races. Fool's Paradise continues to give evidence on the Trentham tracks of the fine, condition in which he is at the present j time. All through his gallop with Royal, Divorce on Thursday morning (says "The ! Watcher") he was anxious to go much faster, and easily held his companion. I Royal Divorce, however, was carrying. over 9.0 as compared with a light-weight; on Fool's Paradise. It is the intention j of the stable to start both horses in the \ Cup. Fool's Paradise will be ridden by j Keesing, who expects to get down to the | weight without any trouble. A rider has I not yet been engaged for Royal Divorce, j •but L. G. Morris may get the mount. | J. H. Jefferd was so pleased with the . Manawatu Racing Club traoks (says the "Standard") that he intended having bis team trained at Awapuni till the sting was taken out of the going at Hastings., As rain fell there he decided to remain in his old quarters. The Awapuni tracks are now coming into favour among trainers in various parts of the North Island, and it is quite on the cards that a couple of prominent owners will have their teams located at Awapuni shortly, In conversation with several trainers recently they spoke eulogistically of the tracks and appointments, especially the plough track, which they said was easiy the best in the Dominion. Besides th-j excellent tracks, many advantages aFe to be gained by Palmerston North being so centrally situated, an important matter when one takes into consideration travelling expenses. At Invercargill on Tuesday morning the three Southland representatives to race at Trentham were galloped on the outside of the course proper, and the work is described by "Sir Modred" as follows:—"Listening Post had Soltoe as a companion over an eight-furlong gallop on the extreme outside of the course ■ proper. The Salferina gelding and his ■ companion ran the first two furlongs in 2Ss, three in 42 2-ss, the half-mile ' in 555, and came home together, the mile occupying lm 46 l-ss. Listening Post naturally held the upper hand, and was moving very freely and with . marked determination when the win-ning-post was reached. Listening Post ' is undoubtedly very well at present, and it will not be the fault of his mentor, F. W. Elis,if he does not get some of the money in his approaching campaign at Trentham. Set Sail wsb called upon to give Schottische and Bran Pie a start of about four lengths over five furlongs. The first furlong was covered in 12 l-ss, the second in 24 4-5s third in 37 4-ss, and Set Sail then asserted herself and eventually ran home a comfortable winner in lm 3 l-ss. The gallop was a very encouraging one, but it may be noted that the track was very fast, and the trio ran downhill over at least three furlongs of the trip. Tommy Dodd was galloping away from Bonnie Olive at the close of a six furloncr gallop, when he did better than lm lis for the full distance. Mr. W. H. Broad's representative moved well, and it was evident that he is leaving for the North i Inland in excellent shape,"

! The Te Aroha Jockey Club have placed on their programme this year a 1 mile race for three-year-olds, the Somers' Handicap. If sufficient patronage is accorded the race it is intended I next year to make it into a weight-ior-j as;e event. I " i Tutankhamen, who has been off the ! .-cone for a long time, is galloping well !at Xapier Park. It is intended that Duo md Tutankhamen will make the tn\ to Foxton. The latter goes fast over five $urloiu*s, but has found three-quarters ' of a mile a bit beyond him. j After J. Brown had tired of the once j brilliant Rational, the gelding went into j R. Johnson's stable, having been bought ' by one of his patrons. Rational showed { very moderate form under the change of surroundings, although he succeeded in ; winning the Porangahau Handicap at Hastings in May last, from a useful lot. R. Johnson deciding not to persevere with Rational, once again lie has gone into J. Brown's charge. FORTHCOMING MEETINGE. The Te Aroha Jockey Club will hold their annual meeting at Te Aroha on i Saturday and Monday, February 27 and March 1, and a most attractive programme has been drawn up, the stakes this season having been considerably increased. "The Herries' Memorial Cup, j one mile and a quarter, is worth 6QOSOYS, while the winner receives a gold cup, value oOgns. Next in importance comes the Handicap, six furlongs, which is endowed with 300sovs. The other events are: Ruakaka Handicap Hurdles of 200sovs, one mile and a half; Trial Handicap, of 200sovs., six furlongs; Somers' Handicap, of 300sovs, for three-year-olds, one mile; Juvenile Handicap, of 200sovs, for two-year-olds, five furlongs; Mangaiti Hack Handicap, of 200sovs, seven furlongs} Hot Springs Handicap, of 250sovs, one mile. On the second day the chief event is the President's Handicap, of 400sovs, one mile.' The Piako Hack Cup, one mile and a quarter, is worth 25050v3, while a like stake is attached to the Farewell Handicap, six furlongs. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Outside of the trial the grass was in general use. Kilperon was holding Glen Innes at the end or a sprint over Half a mile in 525. Star Ranger (F. Goldsbro) nnished in rront or Grand Knight (R. Reed) in a gallop over nine ruriongs in 1.58 3-5, the last mile taking 1.44 3-5. Star Ranger who had the advantage in weights, finished better than his companion. Joy Bird pleased by dashing over hair a mile in 40 1-5. * Indian Sage and Nadarino nnished on terms at the end or six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Royal Divorce and Fool's Paradise set put to gaUop a mile, which was accomplished by Royal Divorce in i.47 1-5, the first hair mile taking 525. Something went amiss with the gear on Fool's Paradise, and be was pulled up in the last ruriong. Royal Divorce hit out a good deal better on the grass than he has been doing on the tun 'truck Inoe and Morning Girt ran down rrom the nve ruriongs post in 1.7 3-5, the last hair mile in 525. ' Minotus dashed over three ruriongs in 395. Vivo took 50 3-5 over a hair mile sprint, a very fair effort. Peggy Ford was too good ror Royal Pointer in a gaUop over six ruriongs, which took 1.18 1-5. Ilka, picked up by Sasham at the hair mile post, galloped five ruriongs in 1.1 4-5, a smart effort. Qrchid dashed over hair a mile in 4 Bs, the last three in 365, which was the best sprint or the morning. Note and Vertigern were well clear or climax in the sprint from the three ruriongs post in 36 l-5s Matu and Axle took 1.501 to gallop a mile. Tresham finished in rront or Tanadees in a mile gallop run in 1.45 4-5, the first hair mile in 52 s. Ltcinius and Agitato were both g-oing very freely at the end or a gallop over half -a mile in 49 4-ss. Licinius, who looks and galloped well, wiu be ridden by C. Eastwood In the Telegraph Handicap.
