U.S.S. SERVICE.
NEW 4000-TON VESSEL. FOR EAST COAST TRADE. WELLINGTON, Friday. J-n order to keep ahead of the needs of New Zealand the Union Company has let a contract to Messrs. Napier, Miller, Ltd., of Glasgow, to build a new steamer for the East Coast service. The vessel, which is now on the stocks at Home, is to be ready by July 31. The Union Company expects her to arrive in New Zealand towards the end of September. The steamer will be an up-to-date cargo carrier of 4000 tons, with engines aft, similar to the last three new steamers which have just arrived in New Zealand. Her dimensions will be: Length, 315 ft; breadth, 45ft; depth, 25ft, while she will have five hatches and the latest appliances for the quick handling of general cargo. The vessel will have a single screw with a speed of 11 knots. The company also advises that the steamer, which is being built to replace the ill-fated Karamu, is expected to be finished at the end of May and should be in New Zealand during June.
