VESSELS FROZEN IN.

ICE IN GULF OF FINXAND. GERMAN 'WARSHIP AT WORK. BERLIN, January 14. The German battleship Hcssen is persisting in an effort to reach the 35 vessels -which have been frozen in the ice in the Gulf of Finland. She is, however, in Berio&s danger herself of being caught in the ever-thickening ice. The Hessen is now surrounded by towering masses of pack-ice, and can only progress by making short rushes. In order to carry out this manoeuvre the Hessen has to go astern for each rush in order to gather impetus. Her 18,000 horse-power engines are being worked to their full capacity.— (A. and N.Z.
