CONTROL OF BUSES.

DTSCUSSED AT MOUNT ROSKILL. A letter was read at the meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last night from the Mount Eden Motor Bus Co. protesting against the draft'regulations submitted by the Public Works Department for the control of motor omnibuses. It transpired that the board had not received a copy of these regulations, and it was decided to apply to the Public Works Department for a copy. In the discussion which followed some members spoke against the adoption of the regulations. " The chairman (Mr. G..E. Tansley) said the letter opened a big question and was a likely subject for a conference among local bodies. He considered that the low fares charged by the buses were due to the tram service, and if the latter were discontinued the public would soon have their travelling expenses increased by the buses. He did not think the board should express an opinion until they had obtained the views of other local bodies interested. Mr. E. Brewer said the residents of Mount Roskill had been promised an extension of the tram service in the district four or five years ago, but it had not come yet. Mr. S. Scarborough moved that the board protest against the proposed regulations. The chairman pointed out that the regulations were not before the board — only a private company's letter against them. Mr. J. J. Preston said he was strongly against the local bodies giving up their right to control the motor traffic. When the board had fully realised thatthey had not reviewed the proposed regulations,, and could not do so 'until a copy was before them, it was decided to refer the letter from the Mount Eden Bue Co. to the Local Bodies Association, and to consider it again at a later date after becoming acquainted with the .proposed regulations. ■
