AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. FIRST TEST NIGHT. ADAMSON BREAKS IOOtfDS RECORD. There were over a thousand people present at the tepid baths last night for the first championship tests in connection with the Auckland championships, and seldom have the swimming public been treated to a more wonderful display than that which was given by Auckland's champion swimmers. There were eleven championship events, two handicap events and a polo match, in all constituting a programme that would be difficult to excel. As was anticipated, the 100 yards men's test, proved the great race of the night. Seven men left the mark and Adamson won a thrilling event by two yards in 58 4-ss, a New Zealand record. The previous holder of the title was L. L. Kronfeld, whose time was 595. Good times were established in all other events, but Adamson established the only record. The 100 yards ladies' test saw only, three starters, Miss E. Stockley, the present champion, winning the - event, slowing > up, in 69 4-ss. The 220 yards ladies' test went to Miss Pirie Page, who swam a wonderful race to win by Byds in 2.51 3-5. In the intermediate grade, Bridson won the 100 yards and 220 yards without any trouble. The whole carnival was conducted in an I excellent manner and the Auckland Centre officials are deserving of much credit for the able way in which things were run. • The guests of the evening were the American athletes, J. A great start saw them all up together at the finish, of the first lap. Smith, Adamson, Fairgray and Stockley held a slight advantage over Enwrlght and Cunnold coming into the second lap, and then Adamson forged ahead, with Fairgray, Cunnold, Smith, Enwrlght and Stockley close up. In a great finish Adamson drew out to the front, .with Faiiyray at hie beels, and Cunnold and .Smith next. . Enwrlght and Stockley were a short distance back. Adamson,' nelng good Judgment, held hie lead, and spplnted home, to win by two yards from .Falrgray, with Cnnnold a touch away, third, and the rest of the Held right on them. The time, 58 4-Ss. She increased thle to ljyds on the fifth lap. with Miiss Stockley behind her and Miss Bell in third .place. The last lap saw Miss Page draw out, and. swimming strongly, get the rerdict by eight yards from Miss Stockley, with Miss Bell a touch away, third. Time, 2.51 3-5. 100 YARDS JUNIOR BOYS' TEST. Contts also started. This' prored an exciting race. A goos start saw Miss Farquhar get to the front with Miss Magee at her heels. Misses Champion and Grant were handy. The field got well away, and Mjss Brown established a slight lead. She made a bad turn, and Miss Hanlon shot ahead to win T>y three yards, a touch between second ana third.
