ENGINE DERAILED.

FIREMAN JUMPS CLEAR. DRIVER HAS LUCKY ESCAPE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday. A special goods train was dispatched early this morning from Palmerston North for Dannevirke comprising 40 trucks. When entering the Papatawa the engine left the rails and rolled over on its side. The trucks were also damaged. By a fortunate chance nobody was seriously injured. The fireman, Mr. L. Keeting, and the enginedriver, Mr. T.! Fletcher, both of Palmerston North, J were very lucky in not being killed or seriously injured. The former, when he noticed tha* the engine was going to fall on Ms side of the track, jumped clear, /While Mr. Fletcher remained in the cab and, amid steam and smoke, crawled out, receiving only a slight scalding. The probable reason for the accident was loose metal on the rails-left as tne result of the recent regrading of the ; road. I The whole of the Hawke's Bay-Wel- | lington service was disorganised, but pasjsengers were transferred at the scene of ithe accident to relief trains. The line was cleared by 3 p.m.
