MATCH AT NEWCASTLE. CORNSTALKS MAKE 214. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, January 8. The match between the New Zealand cricketers and the Newcastle eleven was commenced at Newcastle to-day. The home team batted first, and was dismissed for 214 runs. When stumps were drawn for the day the visitors had lost three wickets for 95 runs. Although Newcastle had 100 runs on the board at the luncheon adjournment ' without loss of a wicket, the visitors' bowlers took charge in the afternoon, and dismissed the local team by half-past four o'clock. Cunningham and Blunt divided the wickets. Wells played a chaneeless innings, and with Barbour put on 108 for the first wicket. I The best New Zealand batsman on the ] day was Dacre, who scored 22, including two fours and one six in a few minutes. The New Zealanders were given a civic reception before the match. The South Australian Cricket Association has officially advised the Victorian Association that the South Australian team has been instructed to leave Melbourne for Sydney by to-night's express, in readiness to commence the match against New South Wales on Monday. Although the Sheffield Shield rules provide that all matches shall be played out, the South Australian Association says the programme of the tour has been drawn up, and it is absurd, under the circumstances, to continue the match over nine days.
