NEW FERRY JETTIES.
PASSENGER AND VEHICULAR. CONTEMPLATED IMPROVEMENTS. The provision of new ferry jetties, both passenger and vehicular, is included in the harbour development scheme which the Harbour Board has before it. It is planned to construct an additional ferry tee and wharf "accommodation in the basin between the existing Ferries and Prince's wharves, to be constructed when demanded by the'growth of ferry traffic. The construction of a viaduct to Freeman's Bay would necessitate the removal of the existing vehicular ferry landing at Hobson Street, and this was to be provided for at two new landings—one between the Railway and export wharves at [Mechanics' Bay, and one at the extreme western end of the north wall. This arrangement would remove congestion and bring the ferry terminals nearer their respective destinations, and keep the vehicular ferry traffic for Nurthcote and Birkenhead entirely outside the commercial part of the harbour. Provision had already been made for. the reconstruction of Devonport wharf, and this should be carried out at an early date. The reconstruction of Northcote wharf in permanent materials should follow when the cost 'of upkeep of the present wooden structure becomes excessive. Plans for the new wharf at Devonport would be put in hand at ohcej- and the work could be commenced as soon as approved and the materials ordered.
