ROAD TO A CEMETERY.
A QUESTION OF UPKEEP. , A request was received by the One- i hunga Borough Council last night from : the Mount Roskill Road Board for a 1 substantial contribution towards the 1 maintenance of > the road in Mount i Roskill leading to the Hillsboro' Ceme- i tery, which is owned by the council. Mr. J. E. Green said the request was 1 unreasonable as a local body could not < make an adjacent district contribute - towards the upkeep of its roads. He was 1 satisfied that the ,heavy traffic on the 1 Hillsboro' road did not come from. One- '' hunga but from the city and other dis- - tricts. ] Mr. R. G. Speight was of the opinion that the burials. at the cemetery were not responsible for the wear and tear on the road. The Mayor, Mr. J. E. Cowell, said a similar condition prevailed at Onehunga, where heavy traffic passed through the borough from the city, but Onehunga did not ask the City Council to contribute towards the maintenance of the Onehunga streets. Mr. A. J. Hipwell said a lot of traffic from other districts passed over Campbell Road but the council had to keep the road in good order. The request was declined.
