AUCKLAND ELEVEN.

FIRST SELECTION. PLATERS FOR PRACTICE. FOURTEEN MEN PICKED. The following players have been selected to practise for the forthcoming representative matches: R. E. Frater, J. P. Gerrard, A. Player (North Shore), S. G. Smith, N. C. Snedden (Ponsonby), E. Horspool, R Rowntree (Grafton), A Anthony, R. Somervell (Parnell), J. Mills, Simpson, A. Postles, I. Cooper (Eden), and L. Saunders (University). Practices will be held at Eden Park every Tuesday Wednesday, and Thursday evening, commencing on Thursday next. The chief difficulty experienced by the selectors seems to have been getting a bowler with some pace to take the placg left vacant by the absence of Allcott, and the selection in that respect seems to have fallen provisionally on Simpson, the Eden colt, who has been responsible for much' of his club's success to date with performances of four for 52, four for 39, and four for 50 in the 3 matches that have been played. Player, who was one of the most promising local bowlers in past seasons, has not been used tliip year to any great extent by his new club, North Shore, but he has won his chance as a batsman, and, in the event of selection, should also be useful as a bowler. Other bowlers in the above list who will have the chance of making good are Cooper (Eden), and Saunders ("Varsity). Cooper to date has taken 11 wickets for 144 runs, and Saunders 15 wickets for 260 runs. .«
