METROPOLITAN TROTS.

NATIVE CHIEF WINS DERBY. ACROX THE FREE FOB ALL. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, The Xew Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring meeting Was continued to-' day. The fields, In the main, were small, and the racing not particularly interesting. Favourite Wins. Audominlon was made a firm favourite for the WhiteleigU Handicap, there not being a great deal of speculation on the race. The favo'urlte was up with the leaders, which were Bonny Spec and Burnie, three furlonge from home. Here Burnie left Ills feet and Avalanche displaced him. Audominlon and Jionuy Spec were, fighting out the finish when Bonny Spec also left his feet, and Auduminion won bya clear length, while Avalanche got 'to Bonny Spec to beat her {or second place in the last few strides by a head. After the race, D. Withers, who rode Audominion, was fined £5 for careless riding, and T. Walils, the rider of Burnie, was severely reprimanded for giving unsatisfactory evidence. Audominlon would not have been beaten had Bonny Spec kept her feet. ' The Derby. Native Chief and Nantwlch monopolised the betting on the New Zealand Derby Stakes, with Native Chief an odds-on chance. The field got away at the first attempt, but Xantwich did not get away so well as her rivals. Wakataua was indulged in the lead for the first quarter, where the. favourite took charge and won all the way with a good deal in reserve in 3.23 4-3, a record for the race. Xantwich made up her ground nicely, but had no chance with the winner, which is ' a three-quarter brother to Logan Chief. - Queen's Own Again. ■Royal Chance was made favourite from Talaro for the November Handicap. Queen's Own was third favourite, but was paying a fair price. Talent broke at the start, and upset the field, and when they settled down there were only three of the ilve with a chance, Donside, also, having lost considerable ground. Queen's Own was always in front, and won comfortably from Talero, which covered extra ground at the bends on the outside of Queen's Own and Royal Chance, all three racing in close company after the first half-mile. Royal Chance was done with along the back the last time, and he finished about four lengths behind Talero. It was a poor race. The winner was handicapped on 4.34, but, making her own pace, only needed to go 4.41 3-5 to win. Minton Derby Wins. The imported horse, Minton Derby, was •better backed than Prince Pointer in the Courtenay Handicap, and he had a little assistance in that his most dangerous rival was very slow In finding his feet, and at the end of two furlongs was nearly 50 ylrds ibchlnd Minton Derby. The latter, too, did not move away too quickly. Harold Burwood, in front, made the pace slow, and Minton Derby was in a handy petition with a round to go. "He tan to the front three and a-half furlongs from home, and was not troubled to win by a length and a-half from Loganwood, with Prince Pointer another three lengths away. Minton Derby won the Auckland Cup two years ago, but it is doubtful if he was the horse then that he is now, and he will need to go back some distance before the Jiandicappers have his true measure. Prince .Pointer also paced well when he settled down, but hie was a hopeless task after the first furlong. Another For Nelson Derby. The public would have nothing else but Nelson DerbY for the Metropolitan Handicap with the Australian horse Auto Machine at the head of the others, and Prince Lyons next. The favourite waa with his field in the first half mile, and going to the front along the back the Inst time won ridiculously easily though only having a length and ahalf's advantage at the finish. Since joining Tomkinson's stable the Nelson. Bingen horse has made great improvement, and he will be a cup performer before the present season is through. Auto Machine again, spoilt whatever chance he had by dwelling on rhe mark, but the first time he goes away he will take sonic .beating from his, present mark. Prince Lyons was .always .in the picture and though having no chance with the winner he beat PointaJena and the others decisively for second place. The Free-For-AU. Great Hope always had charge of the market for the Free-For-All from the bracket, Acron and Great Bingen, with Machine Brick at a long price. After a couple of attempts the field' went away fairly well with i the exception of Realm. Passing the stands 1 Acron and Great Hope were together just ahead of Machine Brick, then Logan Chief and Great Bingen together, and Realm about four lengths behind. Acrotl unwound a fine turn of speed entering the back stretch, and he shook Great Hope oft while his stablemate Great Bingen put in a run on the outside. At the' turn Acron was still In front of Machine Brick, with Great Bingen, Great Hope and Logan Chief in line close behind. Logan Chief struck trouble anS dropped out, while Acron went on from Machine Brick. Great Bingen quickly passed the Australian horse, but could not get to Acron, which won by a clear length. Machine Brick stayed on long enough to beat Logan Chief for third money, Great Hope and Realm finishing in that order at the rear, Acron paced brilliantly and ran the first halfmile in 1.1 2-5. However, he was lucky to beat' Great Bingen, which, apart from being a trifle slow to move, had all his ground to retrieve on the outside of the field, having two horses inside him all ■ round the tend from the Tanks till entering the straight. Logan Chief looked dangerous, but it is doubtful if he could have troubled-the winner on the day. The Trotters. Escapade wound up a good favourite for the Sockburn Handicap for unhoppled trotters while there was also solid support forthcoming for Audobell, Ingle Bingen, First Fashion arid -Master Audo. The favourite made up her ground quickly, and keeping well out of the bother which occurred through nearly every other runner breaking at one time or another during the running, ran out a good winner from Marvin Junior, which brokesrepeatedly without losing any ground. Kean John trotted fairly evenly, but was still ten lengths behind Marvin Junior at the finish. The winner was handicapped on 4.41 and set the others something pretty hard to do by getting to the end of the journey in 4.36 3-5, a more than useful performance. The next to finish after the placed horses were Clonmel and First Fashion. Bonny Logan Wins. Delavan Quest was backed down to a fairly short price for the Royal Handicap with Tenerlffe, Dolly Dillon, Waitaki Girl, and Bonn? Logan next in. order. Waitaki Girl lost her chance on the mark and Ten eriffe, Dolly Dillon and Bonny Logan piloted the field to the home turn where Delavan Quest was within striking distance. Teneriffe led into the Straight, but quickly succumbed to challenges from Bonny Logan, Delavan Quest and Dolly Dillon, which finished in that order. Bonny Logan was going away from the favourite over the last bit, and If the race had been over a longer journey Dolly Dillon would have also headed him. The totalisator returns for the day were "flown £11,172, as compared with the corresponding day , last year.
