LOST DEPOSITS.

TWENTY-FIVE CANDIDATES FORFEIT. SUM OF £250 TO STATE. Each candidate for Parliament was obliged to lodge the sum of £10 with his -nomination, this provision being to deter "men of straw" from nominating and adding to the cost of election when they' have no possible chance of securing a substantial vote. This deposit is forfeited if the candidate does not secure 25 per cent of the total of the votes gained by the successful candidate. In this election no less than 25 candidates failed to obtain the requisite number of votes, and the State will thereby profit to the extent of £250.
