V.R.C. MEETING.
MANFRED THE WONDER. A MARVELLOUS COLT. (Received 2 p.m.) j, SYDNEY, this day. 'J The "Herald," commenting on the Derby, says: "It was no race, or, per- ' haps, one should have said there were ; two races in one—the first, in which ' Manfred was the sole and star performer, and the second in which a number of ; equine aristocrats endeavoured to catch, Belgamba. There was an excellent start, and Manfred was the first to find his legs, remaining in front for a mile and a-quarter, but then was restrained and Elholton allowed to make tbe pace. The I horses were in single file for about a mile, two lengths separating each. It j was evident, with half a mile to go, the field was not fast enough for Manfred, which gave a wonderful display, and although the judge said twelve lengths it appeared to be more. Manfred was always gong well vitbin himself, and equalled the course record for the distance. In the struggle for second place most of the entrants were under the whip, but Belgamba stayer, the best." Referring to the defeat of Windbag, the paper sayS: "Tt is generally thought a mile and a-quarter is not enough for j Pilliewinkie, but tbe liorso gave a won-' derful performance and won in reconl j time." The "Telegraph" says: "Not for many J years has the meeting been so productive I of sensations, but the honours of the | day fell to Manfred. The Derby was a one-horse race. From a perfect start Manfred was quickest to get into his stride. He led out of the straight, but pacemaking not being the object of the jockey, he was steadied, so Elholton might give him a lead. At five furlong-, tho favourite made his run. and to such purpose that with three furlongs to go be was four lengths in front, galloping at ease. He increased the lead every stride until the last hundred yards, when he was allowed to slow down to half-pace. The colt once aiain proved himself one of the greatest three-year-olds, if not the greatest, which has Graced the Australian turf."—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) ! , i
