ST. HELIER'S HEROES.

SCHOOL GATES MEMORIAL. IMPRESSIVE OPENING. Every scholar entering the St. Helier's Bay State School will be reminded of the heroism of the fourteen men of the district who fell in the Great War, as Mr. G. R. Hogan, chairman of the local school committee, reminded the large gathering yesterday. Mr. Hogan was explaining the decision of tlie committee to erect a memorial gate in honour of the men of the district who had gone to school there and had paid the supreme sacrifice in the war. He thought no better purpose could be served than reminding the coming generations of the noble sacrifice these men had made for King and country. Very handsome gates have been erected at the entrance to the school grounds, and these were ceremonially opened yesterday afternoon by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, in the presence of a large number of residents. Fitting tribute to the memory of the men who fell and of all their great example meant to the children of to-day and of the future, were paid by Mr. Hogan, Mr. D. C. Brown (headmaster of the school), Colonel H. R. Potter, Mr. A. Burns, the Rev. C. Houchen, Mr. W. J. Jordan, the Rev. W. Gray Dixon, Mr. John Massey, and Mr. M. G. McArthur (chairman of the Tamaki Roaa Board). Prayer was offered by Mr. Houchen, and the gates were then, unveiled by Mr. Burns. . The sounding of "The Last Post" ana the singing of "0 God Our Help in AgeBast" brought a Vfry impressive ceremony to a close.
