WEST END CLUB. OLDFIELD TROPHIES. On Saturday afternoon the West End Rowing Club held the second set of trial fours of the season for trophies presented by Mr. S. Oldheld, vice-president. Six crews competed, the entries being confined to the old members. The course was from the Reclamation to the clubhouse, and splendid water conditions prevailed. Captain _. H. Sergeant, club president, was judge, and Mr. J. T. Francis, starter. Mr. A. Wilson represented the Auckland Rowing Association. The nrst heat crews were:—W. N. Bright, G. Fogarty, K. Newdick, G. Dowling; _. Skinner, G. Kanerva, G. Bloxham, 11. Little. Bright took the lead from the start and at the wharf Skinner challenged. Bright's crew held sufficient reserve to win by a length. The second heat crews were: A. C. Norden, V. Hewitt, S. Uadley, J. Stratton; J. Skiner, A. Newdick. C. Gulliver, K. Ford. From tbe start Skinner jumped to the front, and, holding the advantage throughout, won by two lengths. The crews in the third heat were:—C. Wright. Hewitt, R. Snowden, N. Conway; C. J. Courtney, A. Culpan, L. McDonald, L. Katterns. Wright's crew was first away, and quickly took the lead, holding the advantage, to win by a good two uengtbs. The crews in the final were stroked by W. Bright, J. Skinner, and C. Wright. At 5.30 p.m. the starter sent the crews away to a good start. Wright and Bright forged slightly ahead, and with little between tbem the crews raced to the three-quarter distance. Nearing the wharf Wright faltered but quickly recovered. Brighfs crews then challenged and a stirring finish ensued, but Wright held out long enough to win by a quarter of a length. The winners were:—C. Wright (4), V. Hewit (4 1, R. Snowden (2), N. Conway (1), Orell (cox). AUCKLAND CLUB. The opening day of the Auckland Rowing Club was held on Saturday afternoon, and considering the time of the year, the water and weather conditions were excellent. To mark the opening of the season, the first race for the Kohn Challenge Cup was held over the trial course, from the King's wharf to a point off the reclamation east of the club house. The following crew, G. A. Jonson (stroke), L. Woods (3T, A. M. Doull (2), M. Ritchie (bow), A. Copeland (cox), challenged the holders of the Cup, who were, R. K. Stacey (stroke), R. Chappell (3), H. Snell (2), J. McComlsh (bow), P. Stacy (cox). Jonson's crew got the better of the start and rowing a fast stroke, quickly settled down to their work. He led all the way down the course. Near the finishing post, Stacey caused him some anxiety, but Jonson spurted to win by half a canvas. An excellent race was witnessed, considering that the rules of tho race state that two men in each crew must be first year oarsmen. Mr. G. Cochrane acted as judge. The crews for next Saturday when trials will be rowed for the Clark Memorial Shield will be, Stacey (stroke), Chappell, Hall, Coutts; Fleming (str), Morgan, Mahon, Hodgson; Woods (str), McComlsh, Snell, Ritchie; Doull (str), Teal, Cochrane, Leabourn. An "At Home" will be held on November 28, when trial fours will be rowed for the trophies presented by Mr. H. Cleal, commodore. Subscription trials will also be rowed on December 12. It is anticipated that another two races for the Kohn Challenge Cup will also be rowed before Christmas. THE MOTHES CUP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day.
