TROUT PLENTIFUL.
BUT DIFFICULT TO HOOK. OPENING OF THE SEASON. , (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ILVMILTON, this day. The majority of streams south of Auckland are too swollen and discoloured through recent heavy rains to provide good fishing, but, notwithstanding this, a number of good catches are reported by Waikato anglers. The Waihou and Waimakariri streams at Tirau were tho venue of many local .sportsmen, and the best hauls were got in this locality. Mr. Maurice Kandrup, of Hamilton, caught at Tirau, in a comparatively short time, a very satisfactory basket of -•> fish. Other anglers report that conditions were unfavourable to fishing, while only small fish were rising to the flyIndications point to both streams being full of trout. Fishing was difficult, however, owing to the overgrown nature of the banks of the streams, and it is suggested that the Acc.limisation Society should employ men to clear them. At some of the best pools it is impossible to cast (ruing to a dense growth or vegetation. Fish are said to be fairly prolific in the Waikato River hetween Hamilton and Horotiu, but are difficult. to hook.
