MOST PICTURESQUE CHURCH.
ST. ANDREWS. EPSOM. MAKING SOME IMPROVEMENTS. Alterations and additions to ""t. Andrew's Church. Epsom, are at present being undertaken. In order to conform with the architectural features of the edifice these improvements have to be carried out in wood, with vertical j weatherboarding and timber studs. The additions entail moving the nave bodily j into its new position, lengthening it j and forming a new transcept. Xew • porches will lie built to north and south of the nave. and the < existing chancel will be taken down 1 in order to form a new one. As the j work entailed is in the city area spec:al , permission was sought at Inst mtrht's meeting of the City Council ;o do the: alterations in wood. Reporting favourably on the request 1 the city engineer said: "St, Andrew s j Church is one of the most picturesque , of the timber churches in and around j ; Auckland, and it would bo impossible . to carry out the additions to the strueI ture in permanent materials without | largely destroying the architectural nature of the existing building." The Council unanimously agreed to rrant the application.
