TAXI TELEPHONE BOXES.

TROUBLE ON A STAND. CITY COUNCIL TAKES ACTION. Permission was sought by a taxi driver to erect a telephone box in the vicinity of Newton Road taxi stand at last night"? meeting of the City Council. He stated he had been restricted from usins the Taxi Owners' Association's telephone owing to l>eing unable to comply with the restriction imposed by the association.

When the matter was referred to the traific inspector, the latter reported that if individual proprietors were permitted to place telephone boxes on taxi stands applications would become so numerous that it would be difficult to find space in the "land area. The inspector suggested that the Taxi Owners' Association be advisod to permit all licensed drivers to use the 'phones on the taxi stands-

The City Engineer was entirely in accord with the above remarks. He expressed the opinion that permission should only be given to properly organised associations for the erection of telephone boxes in the streets. That was unless the council desired to follow the practice obtaining in some other centres of taking over control of all street telephones and renting them out.

It was decided to reply to the request in terms of the traffic inspector's and engineer's reports.
