SOCIALIST PRINCIPLES. PRACTICE AND THEORT. I ■ * Received 2 p m. * LONDON, September 30. The Labour party conference carried the executive's resolution, moved by Mr. j Ramsay Mac Donald, declaring that only upon avowedly Socialist principles could the workers claim a fair, decent livelihood. This was met with an amendment !hy Mr. Ferguson (Glasgow), declaring ' that it is necessary to organise the workers for a vigorous struggle to overthrow the capitalist class. The amendment was overwhelmingly defeatedi The conference also carried a resolution declaring that * unemployment is only preventable by scientific co-ordina-tion of tbe nation's economic resources and industrial undertakings for the public good instead ot" for private gain, ! demanding the nation.il adoption oi the principle of the living wage as the first j charge on industry, adequate main- ; tenance for all unemployed and their ; dependents, pensions aged and mii capacitated workers and widows with ! children, raising the school leaving age to 16 with maintenance grants, provision for training. the unemployed, and demanding that the Government take steps to assist the revival of overseas trade and closer relations with Russia. The conference overwhelmingly defeated the Communist motion to" refer back the paragraph in the executive's report dealing with unemployment. Mr. Gallaugher (Paisley) submitted that the motion asserted that the movement was being banded over" to the ! middle classes. Mr. Mac Donald. replying, said it was j a libel to say that Labour leaders had | blank cheques from Moscow. It was I time such slanders were faced. He | declared that nobody was less entitled ito point the finger of scorn at himself or anyone else from the viewpoint of vulgar , display of wealth or riotous living than , the present British Communist leaders. | The left wingers' attack on Mr. Mac--1 Donald_in connection with the Zinovieff i letter proved a fiasco. The Labour Conference composite reso- , lution on the subject, demanding, inter ' alia, that an apology be sent the Soviet : Government and Zinovieff, was over-; , whelmingly rejected by a show of hands. j (Reuter.) HEAVY BLOW TO "REDS." ! ilteoeived 11.30 a.m.i LONDON, September 30. j ■ The "Daily News" says that the Liver- ; pool resolutions are a heavy blow at | the influence which the Communists | laboriously acquired by years of intrigue. I They provide welcome evidence that i Communists are not likely to succeed in : , their designs.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
