NOTES FROM WHANGAREI. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Hoarirl's win in the President's Handicap at Avondale was well received locally. His owner-trainer, W. Donaldson, is to be congratulated on the sUccoss or his charge The • same trainer also registered mother win with Titaness, and further successes ror the daughter t>f Lucullus do not seem to be far distant, as She has come on very steadily lately. If sent to the post ln the County Handicap at Whangarei, she will be a hard horse to beat.

Nocturne, another locally-owned mare, secured third and fourth in her two essays at Avondale, and Mr. Swanberg's mare must be improved as the result of her racing. She may . get among the money at the local meeting.

Work on the local tracks has been quiet or late. Owing to the heavy conditions brought about by recent rain, no fast work has been possible. The time Is now getting short, and local trainers will have to hunt their charges along. Auruihavis and Florent have arrived for the meeting.

The weights declared Tor the first day of the Whangarei meeting by Mr. F. McManemln, caused quite a stir locally. Your correspondent is of opinion that the Impost or 9.0 given to Hoarlrl, ln the Whangarei CUp, eleven furlongs, cannot be justified, when lt is taken into consideration this horse has only raced ohce over a greater distance than six rurlongs, and that was when he ran unplaced ln a seven furlong event at Thames last November. To award him equal to top weight with Town Bank and Te Monanui needs a very, lucid explanation, especially ln view of the fact tHat the soft ot Antagonist is expected to give weight to such good performers as Ruapapa, Passionate, Gold

Jacket, Barometer and Right and Lert. Another glaring case is that of Dellghtment In the County -Handicap, six furlongs (local conditions). The son of Catmint is weighted at 8.4, and his only performance was a moderate third in the Trial Hack race at the last Whangarei meeting, over five furlongs. To impose 18 pounds above the minimum ror being in front of a very poor lot, and asked to travel another furlong, is certainly on the hard side. More especially is this so when taken into consideration that Florent, which ran second over six furlongs at ln better company, is only asked to carry 21b mor£. in this race also. Sunbar, with no placed performance, : is, asked to coticdde 51b to Allegiance, which [has also no placed performance.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

THB FINANCIAL POSITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Wellington Racing Club made a profit of £6252 on the year. The stakes were £38,830, which is £7350 less than given during the previous year. The Government taxes were £45,290, or £584 less. The totalisator receipts were £77,384, a decrease of £1426. Nominations and acceptances also showed a falling off of £1386. The new stands are almost complete, and, when finished, are expected to be as good 'as any in Australasia. The club voted £300 per annum for five years to the widow of the late secretary, Mr. A. E. Whyte.
