OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND.

UNPROMISING OUTLOOK.

The lambing season is now in full swing on low country in Otago and Southland, and it is feared that heavy losses Will havo to be recorded in many instances (says tho "Otago Daily ."Times"). The c6ld winds which prevailed proved disastrous, but the greatest cause of mortality bas been the absence of grass. The cold weather lias retarded growth— in fact, it may be said that there has been no growth — ■with the result that in a great many cases ewes have come on to lamb without milk for their* progeny. The result, of course, is that the unfortunate lamb lias been abandoned* There can be •little doubt that the mortality among lambs has been serious, especially on poor country where ewes ai*c in low condition. In some cases tne severity of the weather has caused deaths among the juvenile flocka, but only a small percentage of the fatal cases can be attributed to this cause. Flock owners, however, assert that there appears to bo a larger number of twin lambs than usual, bo that this will, if correct, assist to keep the percentage up.

As far as the dairy farmer is concerned, he, too, is a Bufferer. His Cows are coming into profit and he has no feed for them, with the result that the milk tlow is small. This, of course, is e< ? ™ ucll lo ss, for while a cow's milk yield will increase as the season actvance ß tbe quantity can never be fully __%?*__* lfc matte " not how favour--52 _i_JT° n . ma y b0 subsequently. kept Tliia \« an usual a rc being weather. tlle unfavourable
