A.D. 1095. The Norman Barons, unlike the helpless Clergy, had some power pf resistance to the unceasing demands of the King. One of the most powerful, Robert Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland, headed a plot to dethrone William. He was besieged in Bamborough Castle, and, by a stratagem, was decoyed from his stronghold. His wife delivered up the keys when she saw an executioner preparing to put out her husband's eyes. The Earl lingered for thirty years in the dungeons of Windsor Castle.
