THE ORAKEI RLOCK.
'To the Editor.) Sir,—lt is not too late to make a determined stand for the h.t-chold of Orakei block. It would have the double advantage of enabling the poorer folks to get a home there, and it. would be a steady, perpetual source of revenue for the Government. The article by A. J. Brown, A.R.1.8.A.. in Saturday's "Star"' is weli worth reading. As an experienced builder I have fre.uentiv pointed out that there i= a lot of" residental land right in the centre of the city, as it were, covered with little Wooden shacks with the walls only three or four feet apart, and "with tlie roof projection above." This space is almost useless for lighting. One brick wail would be a- cheap as the two wooden wall-, and far safer for tire, as well as a saving in space. Again, this, land itoo dear for sin_le storey house.. It could be made carry three times the population, with better sanitation and greater comfort. The <lav for the quarter-acre close by the hub'of the .it v i> none, but from ail appearances Orakei will he so lied up with restrictions that it will be another quarter for the snobs.—l am. etc., ED. STEVENSON.
