CHICAGO, August 14. The voices of an quartet were broadcasted by wireless from the deck of the MacMillan Expedition's ship Peary within 11 degrees "of the North Pole, and were distinctly heard at the Chicago station 9XN. The voice of Mr. Mac Donald, second in command of the expedition, was heard announcing the numbers.

Ensign Gray was also heard talking as to the day's events. He Baid the aeroplane engines were in good condition after a trial flight.

A dispatch from Etah, Greenland, where the explorers are at present, says the expedition ' has had difficulty in finding a base. Only 17 days of flying time remain of the Arctic summer.

CONSPIRING TO KIDNAP. TWO MEN CONVICTED. NEW YORK, August 14. Two men, Claude Holcome and C. Z. Stephens, were convicted at the Los Angeles Supreme Court of conspiring to kidnap Miss Mary Pickford (Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks), the famous film star, and to hold her for a ransom of 200,000d01. Sentence was deferred. The third defendant was acquitted. The accused were arrested in May. It was stated in evidence that they had held a series of conferences, at which they discussed plans for kidnapping a film celebrity. Miss Pickford was selected because she was supposed to own 2,000.000d0l in her own right. Before the plans of the would-be kidnappers could be matured they were arrested.—(Reuter.) A CONCERTINA SENTENCE. (Received 11 a.m.) LOS ANGELES, August 14. Stephens and HolComb, charged with conspiring to kidnap Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks, have been sentenced from ten years to life.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) BELGIUM AND U.S.A. WASHINGTON, August 14. The negotiations regarding Belgium's debt to the United States have been temporarily suspended awaiting the receipt by the Belgian delegates of instructions from Brussels.

The Debt Commission will meet again on Friday to discuss the concessions granted in the new American proposals. (Reuter.)

COLOMBIA HYDROPLANES,

NEW YORK. August 14.

A souadron of Colombian hydroplanes, rrannert by Germans, has arrived at Rnlboa, Panama, en route to the United States.

The obiect of the flight is said to be to study the possibility of establishing permanent air route between Colombia and the United States.—(Reuter.)
