(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12 noon.) MONTREAL, August 14. In the first doubles of the Davis Cup preliminary between Australia and Canada, Patterson and Hawkes beat Crocker and Wright 6—o, 6—2, 6—4.

Patterson was taken ill overnight with ptomaine poisoning, but was sufficiently recovered to play. He showed no effects of his illness, playing better than yesterday. His service was more accurate, and his backhand improved.

Patterson serving, the Australians won the flrst game B—6 and the second to love.

The Canadians, growing more confident, forced their 1 opponents to the utmost.

The Australians won the third set, 7—5, the fourth B—6. the fifth 4—2, the sixth to love, the Canadians failing to maintain the pace.

In the second set the PattersonHawkes team was working beautifully, and won the first game 5—3, the second to love. The Canadians rallied and took the third 5—3, and the fourth 6—4. Wright's recoveries were spectacular. The Australians took the fifth 4 —l, the sixth 5 —3, the seventh to love and the eighth 4—2.

The third set was hotly contested, the Australians winning the first to love, the third 4—2, the fifth 4—l, the seventh 4—3; Canada taking the second 4 —l, the fourth to love, the sixth to love and -the eighth 5 —3.
