SHARP ADVANCE LN SOUTH, According to southern reports the beef ■ market has jumped during the last week from 15/ to £1 per 1001b. At Addington on Wednesday, beef on the hoof went up to £3 10/ per hundred. There is a very short supply in Canterbury and importations from the' North Island are being made. In. the Auckland province, as already slated in these columns, there is a definite shortage.so that the resources of Hawke's Bay arid the Wairarapa.are. UHely.,to..be severely taxed to 'fill f equirjemetits. Vflje -head 'of a prominent firm of butchers --informed a "Star" representative that his. ; firm is literally scouring; the whole of the North Island in an.endeavour to get sufficient supplies of' choice, beef. ; The advent of spring will ease the position but' the real cause of the-present dearth of beef cattle is the wholesale killing off of Jcbws during the slump a few-years .ago.
