The deatli sentence passed on Franz Swaboda has been commuted to imprisonment for life.—(A. and NZ Cable.) Franz Swaboda is the young German "W'lio killed Lance-Corporal Cromar, of the Otago Infantry, in a Cologne park during the time that New Zealand troops were assisting to occupy it. A band of drunken German youths, led by Swaboda.. were parading the park ostensibly to protect German girls. Cromar was sitting on a park seat with a German girl when the youths appeared and threatened him. Cromar drew his bayonet and it is said called on a comrade of the same battalion to help him. Swaboda shot Cromar dead, was arrested and pleaded drink and war worry as an excuse. The case was put off from time to time, and was only concluded after a witness had been sent from New Zealand by the Government.
