Joseph Word, cashier in a bank at Benwood, West Virginia, has bo?ii arrested on a charge of stealing £00,000 from the bank. He was appointed cashier 24 years ago. In the following year, according ' to Ward's confession, he commenced taking money. He continued systemati- i cally till lie fled -when an investigation commenced a month ago.—("Sun.")

TRAFFIC IN NARCOTICS. AN OFFICIAL TRAPPED. (Received 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 12. Colonel William Gray Beach, superintendent under the Narcotic Enforcement Act in Chicago for a period of 40 years, has confessed to conducting traffic with underworld sellers of narcotics while posing as their prosecutor. Three of his assistants have been arrested. Guards constantly watch Beach in view of his threat to commit suicide.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)

AUSTRALIAN -WOMEN'S TEAM. (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 12. The Australian women's team is expected in New York on September 18, too late for the American championships.
