U.S.S. CALIFORNIA BERTHS.

AT PRINCE'S "WHARF.

TIED UP WITHOUT A HITCH.

■ Promptly at 6.30 a.m. to-day, Captain Sargent, Harbour Master, boarded U.S.s. California- at her anchorage in the stream *nd as the clocks were striking the hour of 7 a.m. thtf battleship was tied up snug at her berth at the Prince's wharf. The proceeding was carried out without a hitch. It was dead low water at the time and the whole operation speaks well for the berthing facilities for 'big ships in Auckland harbour. Alongside the wharf the California looks to be smaller than when she was in the stream. The "United States battleship does not nearly take up the room H.M.s. Hood did, there being 237 ft difference in length in favour of the Hood. The latter is also sft more beam than the United States flagship, but the California draAvs a foot more water, her draught being 33ft Gin as against H.Ms. Hood's 32ft Gin. It will thus bo seen that to berth the California at dead low water this morning was no mean feat.
