Many "Jackies" Come Ashore.

LARGE PARTY GOES TO WAIKATO.

CIVIC "AT HOME ,, TO-NIGHT.

Cold and showery, to-day was not an ideal start off for the fortnight's round of festivities arranged for the entertainment of the officers and men of the United States fleet which made such a stately entry into the harbour yesterday, but it is to be hoped J that before the visit is over our guests will have pleasanter memo* J rjes of Auckland. New Zealanders are not quite so demonstrative as Australians in making acquaintance, but nevertheless many of • the visitors have already made friends ashore, and before the fortnight is over there is little doubt hosts and guests will have an excellent appreciation of one another, and that the two branches of the English-speaking race will be well on towards that better understanding, which is one of the main objects of the Pacific cruise. Very little was done to-day in the way of entertaining; the idea being to allow the visitors to settle down first. Six hundred men left by special train this morning for Hamilton as the guests of the Government. This evening in the Town Hall the civic "At home" to the admirals and officers is to take place, and a brilliant assemblage is assured. To-morrow morniqg and afternoon has been left free, and in the evening the Victoria League and Navy League are giving a ball in the Town Hall.
