AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

VISIT FROM AMERICA.

TEAM TO BE SELECTED SkORTLY.

It is likely that an early decision will ba made regarding the personnel of the ; American amateur. athletic team to visit New Zealand in the coming summer sea- ' son. Jackson fechblz, fiarokT Osborne, and "Tiny" Hartranft, all three great performers in their respective sections of -' track and field events, have previously . been mentioned as likely members of - the American team, and Schblz in particular, has expressed a very keen desire - to make, the trip. However, acting upon the suggestion of the, New representative in America (Mr. !C. George Krogness), the New Zealand A:A. Council decided to defer 'its until the American championships had been decided, and the performances of : the team, and Scholzin particular, had S& been forwarded. These are now over, and show that further great achievements have been made. From the suc--cessful competitors there is material enough for a team of world's champions, and there is no doubt that New Zea- ...'. land's choice will be a team of that class. ||g In advising New .Zealand. Ama,r _~ teur Athletic. Council results fog the American championships, Mr. \Krogness requests that an early, selection be, made, in order that arrangements for the tour might be completed as soon as possible.- He is anxious to carry out his part of the big undertaking in a manner __ thoroughly satisfactory to New Zealand. -In the course of, a letter, to Mr. J.-W. Heenan, of Wellington, Mr. Krogness 'states that the National 'Amateur Athletic Union championships, held at San Francisco, early last month, -were a great auncess, and some very fine performances were made. Jackson Sqhplz ran splendidly He was seconcl in the senior 100 yards dash andrfirsit' \im the 220 yards "event. . "He is a very fine, likable and intelli-

gent; young man," Mr. Krogness adds, "and I am sure he would 'take* in New -. Zealand, I think Scholz would have won . the 100 yards if he had been watching ' Hussey (the winner, and his team mate) and not Hubbard, He watched Hubbard for the final effort and overlooked Hus•ey, who he can beat. Harold Osborne

• won the senior —igh jump at 6ft 7in. On i almost every one of his jumps he hits • r the bar so that it bounces on the pegs and yet stays on; he holds it on with his i shoulders as-he. rolls over. He also won the decathlon." - ' ;
