NORTHCOTE DRAINAGE.

■ , I NEARING COMPLETION". j A communication from the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. H. Chesson, read at the meeting of the Northcote Borough Council last evening, pointed out that I there was no borough by-law prescribjing the standard of work necessary for drainage and plumbing work to connect with the new system. On his recommendation the council decided that the borough be gazetted as a district in which the department's regulations relating" to drainage and plumbing should apply. The engineer supervising the sewerage installation. Mr. F. E. Powell, reported that further wet weather had caused delay, but pipe-laying was almost completed, a length of 200 ft remaining to complete the sewers, while practically the whole of the branch drains were in. Cleaning and flushing sewers, fixing manholes, ventilators, etc, was proceeding, and two sections at and Beach Road had been examined and passed. These sewers were now ready for connections, and what little work remained to be done on them could be attended to during the next month. The main sewer would be taken in hand next, and, given fine weather, it should be possible to allow connections to the area, roughly, south of the Council Chambers and north of King Street, within the next .fortnight. The scour pipe to the syphon had still to be laid, but as this did not affect the scheme in the meantime, the contractors, had been . allowed to postpone this work in order to concentrate on the main area. At the pumping station plastering was under way on the underground chambers, and the brick building was about up to the rooL A commencement with the erection of machinery should be made next week. The tanks were put under test during the month, and had proved satisfactory. Some minor alterations were required to the outfall.
