POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Mr. Gubb, J.P.) DRUNKENNESS AND INDECENCY. Joseph Manares (2T) and Leslie Kellogg Thomson (31) were each charged with drunkenness and with committing grossly indecent acts in public streets. Both were convicted and discharged on the first charge and fined £3 or seven days on the other. In the case of another man, stated by his counsel to be a window dresser, also charged with drunkenness and having committed a grossly indecent act, the case was adjourned for six months. His name was ordered to bo suppressed. PROHIBITION ORDERS BROKEN. Fines of £2 or seven days' imprisonment were imposed on Charles W oodly (50) and George Henry Howard, each of whom had pleaded guilty to charges of procuring liquor while prohibited. They were both convicted and discharged for drunkenness. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. "This man pleads guilty to being drunk and with using obscene language sir, and I would ask that his name should be suppressed, for accussed is a respectable man who conducts his own business,"' stated Mr. Bryce Hart. Accussed was a first offender. For drunkenness he was convicted and discharged and for making use of the language he was fined sib. BACK TO THE ISLAND. After George. Hunt Moody (44) had pleaded guilty to being found drunk in Church Street. Devonport, procuring liquor while prohibited and with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation, Mr. W. «• Campbell, probation officer, stated that Moody's license was not automatically cancelled and he would have to return to Rotoroa Island. Accused was convicted on all three charges and was ordered to be sent back to the inebriates' island. ONE MONTH FOR ASSAULT. After being arrested on a charge of "assaulting Cornelius White, a seafaring man, George Reed (27) was found to have deserted from R.M.s. Corinthie at Wellington. This morning he pleaded guilty to striking White without provocation and also to the other charge. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was indicted, accused being ordered to be placed aboard the Corinthie when she sails from the Dominion. ASSAULTED HIS WIFE. On behalf of George Reid (30), who was charged with assaulting his wife, Bertha Reid, Mr. Sclwyn Clark entered a plea of guilty. The evidence adduced by the police was to the effect that accused had gone to his wife's house and had caught hold of her by the arms, shaking her so hard that her bat was displaced. Mr. Clark said that the parties were seperated, but that accussed had been encouraged a good deal by his wife. This was denied by Mrs. Reid. Mr. Poynton: This is the man who was before mc on March 2 last for assaulting his wife. He has been warned that he must not molest her, but still he persists. He has been bound over to keep the peace and I can put him in gaol until next March, although 1 do not want to do that, I think a short, sharp sentence will be the best for him. Sentenced to seven day's imprisonment. THEFT OF £15. A young man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, and for whom Mr. Tipping appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen £15, the property of George Santo. Detective O'Suilivan. who had charge of the inquiry, said that accused went to a city hotel and represented that he had been sent to collect the sum of £15. Of this amount £11 had been recovered, the balance being spent by accused in liquor. Mr. Tipping described accused as a highly respectable young man who had never been in trouble before. The w-hole thing resulted from a drunken freak. Counsel's application for suppression of the name was granted. Accused was admitted to probation for a period of two years, and was ordered to make restitution of the balance of the money received. REMANDED. Two more young men, one aged 1!) and the other 20, then appeared charged with theft. The younger accused was charged with stealing two suits, four overcoats, a pair of shoes, a pair of boots, a shirt and tics, valued at £24 7/. the property of Ross and Glendining, Ltd.. the other being charged with stealing a dinner set valued at £3, tlie property of J. G. Raine and Company. Both were remanded to appear this day next week, and on the application of , counsel, their names were ordered by the magistrate to be suppressed.
