EARLY MORNING BLAZE.
AVONDALE STORE GUTTED. TOO FIERCE FOR BRIGADE. The Central Stores, on the corner of Rosebank and Great North Roads, Avondale, was the scene of a disastrous fire about five o'clock yesterday morning. Tlie fire burned fiercely and little of the stock in the store wns saved. The outbreak occurrred in a portion of the building where artificial manures and tinned goods were stored, but it quickly spread. There was a quantity of oil among the goods and this aggravated the fire and made tlie work of the Avondale brigade a difficult one. The brigade did not obtain control until the store had been gutted and a portion of the building, occupied by a land agent, threatened. The Central Stores are conducted by Mr. X. McKenzie. The building is a one-storey wooden structure and is owned by Mr. C. E. Fenron. It was insured for £000 with the Eagle, Star and British Dominions Insurance Company. On the stock there was a policy of £800. The land agent's premises are occupied by Mr. George Rose, who had a small cover on the fittings.
