BEAM WIRELESS.

THE PROPOSED STATION

NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION. BIG CLAIMS MADE. Great claims have been made for beam wireless, the latest invention of the wizard, Marconi. An idea of the important movements that are now in hand for tlie establishment of stations in different parts of the Empire, and what is expected from the service when it is under way, was furnished to a "Star" representative this morning by Mr. E. T. Fisk, managing director of Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., of Australia, who, with Mr. -Mason Allard, the chairman of directors of the company, arrived in Auckland by the Xiagara. The two gentlemen are en route to Xew York, Montreal and London in connection with the beam services. These services are going to run between Australia, England aud Canada, said Mr. Fisk, and direct high-speed wireless services will be established between Australia, India, South Africa and Canada. Beam stations to connect with England are now actually under construction. Tbe Australian stations arc being built near .Melbourne. There will be one transmitting group and one receiving, the former to be about 50, and tlie latter about 15 miles, from the city. Tlicy will bo operated from the heart of Melbourne by automatic apparatus, and all the other capital cities will have wireless figure-stations to work the traffic of each State into and out of the main overseas services. Speedy Operation. For example, if a person in Sydney wants to send a message to London, he hands it in at the Sydney oflice. It is then sent by wireless to the main beam station, and from there is automatically re-transmitted direct to London, the whole operation occupying a few minutes. The stations will be able to work at high speed 24 hours a day, and will be able to handle four messages at the same time —for instance, one from Kngland, one from Canada, one to England and one to Canada. The secret of the beam is that it concentrates all its energy in the one direction, instead of sending it out in all directions. lt is so efficient that the power is reduced to about 23 kilowatts, but it has the same effect as a station with 1500 kilowatts. Mr. Eisk has been experimenting with it for the past 18 months, and has found everything very satisfactory. He is sure that it will prove a success from a commercial standpoint. He could say nothing definite regarding the question whether Xew Zealand would be incorporated in the new scheme. Tlie Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., has a capital of £1,000,000. The (iovernment of Australia holds 500,001 shares, and the rest are in the bands of shareholders in England, Australia and Xew Zealand. Broadcasting Stations. Regarding broadcasting stations in Australia, -Mr. Fisk said that there are six operating broadcasting stations, and three more are contemplated. Of the present six, three are 5-kilowatt stations, and two more of this power are under construction. The power of the well-known Sydney station, 2 F.C., is going to be still further increased in a few months' time.
