A GENEROUS GIFT.

PUBLIC RECREATION GROUND. """ AT MOUNT BOSKILI. MR. WINSTONE'S DONATION. Still another very generous gift has been made to the people -of Auckland and those of Mount Roskill in particular, and the many public parks and recreation grounds in and about the city have been added to by the presentation by Mr. Geo. Winstone, sen., to the public of an area of about 21 acres, the upper part of the volcanic cone. Mount Roskill, while a further 12 acres', on the flat, to be known as Winstone Park, is also part of the gift. The donation was remarked upon by Mr. G. E. Tansley, chairman of the Mount Roskill- Road Board, who said that its vaUie to the people of Auckland could not be.- overestimated. One of the few volcanic cones of scoria, which had escaped the despoiler, the mountain, except for a slight scar on one side, was in a state of nature. The value of the scoria alone was estimated to be ■ £80,000.- The mountain was situated in the centre of a property of 420 acres, which was to be subdivided into 1600 sections.

While frilly realising Mr. Winstone's generous gift, the Mount Roskill Board asked Mr. Winstone for a strip of concrete on either side of the new road, which would "be an extension ojf Dominion Road, and would run through the property. Mr. Winstone agreed, and the road would have twelve feet of concrete on either side, and be uniform with Dominion Road. .
